Abstract: The proposed employment of renewable resources in the preparation of new materials should consider the economical aspects involved, such as availability, potential uses and cost implications. The state of Bahia is Brazil’s largest piassava (Attalea funifera Mart) fibre producer. New applications with added value could arise as a result of the study of the physical and mechanical properties of fibres and lees. In this work, the piassava fibres and lees were washed and vacuum dried for 48 hours and then analyzed by TGA, DSC and SEM. Fibre and lee densities were also calculated. Results showed that piassava fibres and lees have similar physical properties, which suggests that piassava lees can also be used as a reinforcement of composite materials.Key-words: Piassava, fibres, lees, physical properties.
